CABERNET SAUVIGNON, TERRUNYO, 2003, MAIPO, PIRQUE, CONCHA Y TORO
Let's see....
1.spent 10 days in Bordeaux tasting 2003s from bottle,2004 as works in progress, and checked out quite a few 2005s post-assemblage....
2.canceled a 6 day honeymoon in Paris with the love of my life...my wife... she took a terrible fall a few days ago and broke two vertebrae in her neck in addition to a concussion and 20 stitches in her head...the good news is she has no paralysis but must endure a Medieval neck brace for 24/7...for about six weeks...I flew back yesterday and she is doing fine...helluva lot sronger and braver than I am...must say she even looks damn cute with her tres chique neck collar......the advantage of being a natural beauty..
3.within 24 hours of that news, a young punk ran a stop sign in Pomerol and demolished my rented Volvo....I got a new car from Hertz and escaped without a scratch...although I was admittedly shaken not stirred ...and damn lucky..
4.OK....no real surprises with 2003s...except they are fresher and not nearly the freaks a few people made them out to be....strengths of the vintage are northern Medoc and the limestone/clay terroirs in St.Emilion(oh yeah...just wait until you taste Pavie!)....Pomerol,with a few exceptions, is mediocre....
5.2004s are tasting better...a good vintage with some surprisingly top wines from Margaux ...much better there than I thought 10 months ago...
6.Hate to tell you, but 2005 is the real deal....I don't think it makes much sense to say,as many Bordelais are already..that it is the finest vintage in memory, but it truly has everything....great aromatics...fabulous ripeness...high but sweet tannins...and amazing concentration....and unlike 2004,2003,2002,and 2001,it actually appears very consistent in all AOCs....but I will return in late March to do the full monty tastings....I can already see the "usual suspects" saying Bordeaux has sold its soul to a few American wine critics...why?.....alcohols in 2005 are higher than 2003(which are primarily in the 12.8-13.5% range)...blame the drought..tiny yields and abundant sunshine...the real causes...not any wine-writer...
7.I did catch-up on board reading this morning and must say it is sad to continue to see what once were reasonably responsible, talented, and accomplished British wine writers behave with such paranoia...exaggerating,distorting,falsi fying, and just exhibiting appallingly prejudiced and narrow-minded palates...as I have said and so fervently believe, the glories of wine are it's diversity....that it does come in so many shapes and sizes....no size fits everyone, but it is this remarkable assortment of smells, flavors, textures, and personalities that has fueled my work and kept me endlessly fascinated for over 30 years....and contrary to the cheesy deception and obstinate repetition of falsehoods offered by a handful of writers who appear to have a sense of being dispossessed as well as a loss of power, the irrefutable truth is that we have so many more styles of wine and what...100 fold+ more high quality wines than existed 20 years ago.....feel free to express a dislike for this or that...hell that is what wine connoisseurship is all about...but to arbitrarily call for wines to be made by some strict and ancient recipe(do I detect the Illuminati at work?)...one where only a handful of "gifted" writers are capable of appreciating such complexity and nobility...and decree them "acceptable" for all of the uncultured slobs in the USA and the rest of the world....ummmm... wouldn't this lead us to fewer and fewer choices, and a sort of vinofascism that would be intolerable.....
Some friendly advice to them...as they all seem to be droning on about the same "talking points".....when you are in a deep hole....common sense says....stop digging....
Thanks for all the support....she is doing pretty well....and feels very lucky....we have an unusually steep staircase and the thought of missing the first step and going down head over heels gives me the chills....just like that ad on TV.."LIFE SOMETIMES COMES AT YOU FAST"..... Hertz has been a terrific car agency....as I have destroyed(not by my hand)a new Audi(the floods of CNDP in 2002) and a new Volvo station wagon....BTW....one of the great wines I tasted in Bordeaux was from Chile....the 2003 Almaviva tasted last week at Mouton(it is in the bottle and in the market) is the finest cabernet-based wine I have ever had from Chile....pretty special stuff...like to hear what some of you think....
En attendant Almaviva 2003. Essayez CS Terrunyo 2003.
